The History of Yukata
Name of yukata comes from the shorten of Yukatabira.
Yukatabira used to wear by men of high standing.
They wear Yukatabira as bathrobe after they took a bath.
So they loved Yukatabira by the effect of relaxing.
Plus, women wore Susoyoke(underskirt) called Yumaki.
it was an underskirt winding up on their hip.
In the later of Edo period, Yukata was made of cotton.
Very small patterns dyed on the cloth.
Due to a prohibition of the shogunate, it was little sumptuous for the citizen.
Also dyeing artisans used to dye beautiful small patterns on the Kamishimo(Samurai costume).
But in the Meiji period, Japan has changed dramatically and Kamishimo has gone so dyeing artisan had nothing to do.
So they started dye unique Kamishimo patterns and humorous patterns on Yukata.
By tradition, people used to wear next to bare skin but these days we wear thin underwear.
The way to wear
Yukata has two types which are everyday wear and street style.
Street Style
When you wear yukata as street style, we need nagajuban with Han Eri and white tabi.
Footwear is geta not zouri. Fan put into left side of obi.
Materials are cotton, hemp, cotton and silk mixed type and more.
Hanhaba obi is good, but the better way is nagoya obi.
This coordinate is suitable for restaurant, outdoor concert, art museum.
Everyday wear
This way, we don’t wear nagajuban. Then put on yukata directly on your skin.
We ties hannhaba obi and heko obi. Not wearing tabi and bare skin is comfortable.
Most popular materials are cotton. White, navy and colorful types are so beautiful.

Season and the way to care
We can wear yukata from July to September.
Modern yukata can wash easily.
Cotton type shrinks, so it’s better to wash by hand.
Hemp type is weak, so it’s better not iron.
