We use Obiage when we tight Obi around the waist with rolling Obimakura.

Obiage is rolled between Kimono and Obi.

Features Of Obiage

Obiage hides the strings of obimakura so that the figure of Kimono looks more beautiful.

We wrap Obiage between Kimono and Obi and finally, Obijime tightened on the obi.

 

In the Edo period, there are no Obimakura, so women only used Obiage.

Now we have Obimakura and it keeps Obi’s well-shaped figure.

Obiage shows a little bit on the Obi and these days it’s known as a decorative role.

 

Materials are silk, chemical fiber, and cotton and also there are sibori, rinzu and tirimen.

Patterns are plain, gradation color, tiny little flowers and so on.

We need to concern the combination of Kimono and Obi, so that we can enjoy so many different figures.

 

The recent trend is young women show more Obiage cloth, by contrast, elderly women show it a little bit on the Obi.

 

TPO of Obiage

There are two types of Obiage: for the formal and casual scene.

 

Formal Type

For the ceremonial scene, we wear Kurotomesode and we can only use white and silver Obiage like plain color or has gold and silver crane patterned embroidery. And also rinzu, tirimen and sibori cloth.

 

For Irotome, Iromuji, and Houmongi it’s better to use more colorful Obiage.

It’s said that the more we use deep color the more Kimono become casual.

The large volume of Obiage like sousibori matches perfectly for Furisode.

 

Casual Type

If you hesitate to choose Obiage, it’s easy to find a similar color with Kimono or brighter color of Kimono.

There are so many patterns of Obiage like animal, flower and geometrical figures.

 

Summer Obiage

From July to September, we put undertone Obiage made of silk and hemp.

The method of weaving called Ro is very useful because it fits formal and casual types.
