Hanhaba-obi is half width of fukuro obi and nagoya obi.
Often used for tsumugi kimono, yukata, cotton and wool kimono.
Features of hanhaba-obi
Hanhaba obi has two types which are called kobukuro obi and hitoe obi.
Kobukuro obi is sewed like fukuro obi and hitoe obi is sewed by one cloth.
The width is around 15~17cm and also known as hoso obi.
The length is around 360cm and sometimes it’s over 400cm.
We can find reversible type obi and patterns are printed all over the cloth.
So that you can enjoy each way to tie and it’s no need to worry about top and bottom of obi.
Plus, hanhaba obi doesn’t need obiage, obijime, obi makura and other accessories.
The history of hanhaba obi
The width of obi has changed with the times. Thin obi used to be popular.
Tracing the history of kimono’s obi, in the heian period, obi was tiny rope.
Late of edo period, the width was expanded and became more decorative.
Materials of obi
Materials of obi are silk, cotton, hemp and chemical fiber.
For formal scene, we use nishiki ori(brocade), donsu(satin damask), and karari(Chinese weaving) weaved hanhaba obi.
Silk hakata ori, hemp and chemical fiber are used for casual scene.
Classic hakata obi can wear all the year around.
How to tie hanhaba obi
Compare to drum knot of nagoya obi, tieing hanhaba obi is easy.
We can tie Bunko-musubi knot, Kaino-kuchi musubi knot, Yanoji musubi-knot, Karuta musubi-knot and Candy musubi knot.
Bunko-musubi knot:It’s usually ties with yukata and a kind of butterfly.
Kaino-kuchi musubi knot:It seems so elegant and it fits for women and men.
Yanoji musubi-knot:It seems like “Ya” of katakana.It’s simple and stylish. It’s flat shaped and not capable of collapsing.
Karuta musubi-knot:It’s a square shaped and plain which doesn’t have a knot
Candy musubi knot:It’s pretty and seems exactly candy and longer hanhaba obi is recommended.
